“Indeed, we may eventually come to realize that individuality is born in the eccentricities and unexpected shadow tendencies of the soul, moreso than in normality and conformity. One who cares for the soul becomes someone at ease with idiosyncrasies and the unexpected.” — Thomas Moore
To engage in the work of psychotherapy is a profound act of courage. It requires risk, persistence, and often the willingness to look at very painful experiences. To seek positive change in one’s life is a mark of health and strength.
My role is to work collaboratively with clients to name and move effectively toward the change they seek. It is my experience that the clinical relationship is one of the most important ingredients in successful therapy.
I have an ability to engage interactively with clients, to be genuinely curious about their life stories, and to elicit and interpret soulful material without judgment. Soul is crucial for me: identifying and working with individual, personal structures of meaning.
I strive to identify and build on healthy client choices and behavior, and to recognize what clients are doing right, while also looking carefully at areas that are no longer serving them well, and that they are ready to change.
I believe the work of growth requires increasing awareness. Greater awareness includes taking personal responsibility for an expanded set of options. Awareness of options decreases a sense of victimhood. Clients are almost always more powerful than they think.
